KWANZAA is the time when we give thanks for our achievements as Afrikan people, and prepare
for victories to come. KWANZAA is a Pan-Afrikan Celebration of and for the Black Family.
Kwanzaa is a Afrikan community festival based on the various “First Fruits Ceremonies” that have been celebrated around the Afrikan continent since ancient times. These ceremonies are known by different names, for example “Odirwa” among the Ashanti, “Eje” amongst the Yoruba, and “Umkhosi” among the amaZulu etc.
Based on careful studies, a team of Afrikan researchers, led by Dr. Maulana Karenga, introduced Kwanzaa in 1966 as a Pan-African celebration for the unification of all Afrikan/ Black people - regardless of faith, nationality, background, ideology, language and birthplace.
Kwanzaa is now observed from 26th December to January 1st and its foundation is expressed through seven principles:
-“Nguzo Saba”:
1. UMOJA (Unity)
2. KUJICHAGULIA (Self determination)
3. UJIMA (Collective work and responsibility)
4. UJMAA (Cooperative Economics)
5. NIA (Purpose)
6. KUUMBA (Creativity)
7. IMANI (Faith)
In South Afrika, Kwanzaa has evolved into a gathering where Afrikans from various backgrounds engage in activities inspired by Pan-Afrikan values and Black Consciousness; serving as a catalyst to unite communities in celebrating collective achievements and fostering encouragement for continued collaboration.
eBukhosini Solutions has co-ordinated Kwanzaa celebration events in South Africa since 2002, - drawing from the regional traditional celebrations of Umkhosi, Incwala, Dikgafela, Loma, Uluma, Ingcubhe, Ingxwala, Go-Loma Thotse etc. Every year, the Opening Ceremony takes place on 26th December, and invite all age groups of Afrikan community come together for a ceremony which also includes an Afrikan market, food stalls, musical offerings and an inspiring program for children.
This year marks the 24th anniversary of eBukhosini Solutions observing Kwanzaa, the quest for African unity in South Afrika. The distinctiveness of Kwanzaa is encapsulated in its triple objective: Honoring Afrika, offering a platform for constructive dialogue, and inspiring tangible efforts for transformation.
